David Barnes - Chair Of Governors

My wife and I moved to Fleet in 2010 to start our family.  Our eldest daughter attended Heatherside Junior School and our youngest daughter is currently in Year 4.  I joined HJS as a Governor in 2019 to support the leadership team in ensuring that the children continue to prosper to their individual full potential in a supportive, safe and well-resourced environment.

I work in a leadership role within sales and marketing in the technology sector and also involved in the Executive Committee of one of Fleets Scout Groups.

Siobhan  Farrell

My daughter attended Heatherside Infants School before we moved to Abu Dhabi where I taught as a Primary School teacher for 12 years with Literacy and Reading for young learners being one of my main interests. We returned to Fleet in 2011, and I continued to teach locally and became more involved in working with children with speech and language communication difficulties. I have recently retired and becoming a Governor means I can continue to share my experience and perspective to support the school and children to continue to thrive with the many challenges and changes ahead. I have always been involved in the wider school community and I look forward to continuing this with Heatherside Junior school.

Claire Harvey

I've lived in Fleet with my family since 2018 and currently work for a local housing association. Our daughter is currently at Heatherside Juniors and is very happy here. There is fantastic support and enthusiasm from all staff across the school for all their pupils and helping them to learn and grow (both academically and as individuals).

My career in housing, and in corporate communications before that, means that I'm used to working collaboratively with others to support people and achieve the best outcomes. I'm keen to become more involved with my local community and hope that I can represent the Heatherside parents to help the school to meet any future challenges and keep striving for excellence while continuing to nurture every pupil

Sarah Robert

II moved to Fleet in 1992 and, with the exception of two overseas work assignments, I have lived here since then. I am married and have one daughter who attended Heatherside Junior School some10 years ago. I have recently retired and have decided to take up the role of governor in order to support the school, its children and  the wider community.

I have worked in international tax and finance throughout my career and will bring this experience to my new role as school governor.

Alex Newman

My partner and I moved to fleet in 2024 to remain close to family, friends and work, having lived in Farnborough the previous 8 years. I’ve been working as a deputy financial controller for the last 3 years having spent most of my career in finance, with a focus on budgeting, forecasting and cash management.

I’m looking to use my skills to get more involved and give back to our community so that we can give our children the best start. I also understand how important junior school is in forming future passions, for me this was the opportunity to get involved in music where I picked up the trumpet and piano and took this forward playing in multiple bands. So I’m keen to get stuck in and make sure we nurture our school and provide the same opportunities.

Tom Murray

I am a civil servant, currently responsible for a large, multidisciplinary team of analytical and science professionals all working to help the UK reduce waste and increase recycling at the Department for Environment and Rural Affairs. This includes, designing, delivering, monitoring and evaluating national policies and strategies, ensuring they are based on robust evidence and analysis. I am an economist by profession and accredited member of the Government Economic Service, studying it at both undergraduate and doctoral level. I bring strong leadership experience, numeracy skills and an ability to provide independent scrutiny in a supportive manner. I've previous experience as a charity trustee at University of Birmingham's Guild of Students. I have two young children, live very locally to Heatherside Juniors, and have been living in Fleet for the last 4 years.

Susie Lewington

I am a junior school teacher at Greenfields Junior School, Hartley Wintney and I’ve worked in education for the past 14 years. With this in mind, I have a secure understanding of the education system. I also recognise the challenges that teachers and schools face which I hope will allow me to support with a focus on maintaining excellent outcomes for all pupils.

My daughter is in Year 5, with a younger one who will also be attending Heatherside Junior School over the next 8 years and my eldest now at secondary school. I love being part of the Heatherside community and I firmly believe that the children in our local area deserve excellent educational provision.

Heatherside Juniors is a wonderful school which promotes the best for young people, which I am proud to be a part of.

Mark Wilson MC

I have lived in Fleet with my partner since 2017. I have two boys and I also have a stepdaughter who attended Heatherside School. After 22 years of service with the Parachute Regiment, I am now currently Head of Estates & Facilities at an independent school in Surrey.

During my career, I have gained extensive experience in management and leadership. I am qualified in project management and health & safety, and I am a Technical Member of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health. I enjoy applying these skills in practical settings.

As a volunteer Advocate for the Woodland Trust, I am passionate about conservation. Outside of work, I enjoy sports and walking our two dogs, Hooper and Brody. In 2007, I was honoured to receive the Military Cross from HRH Queen Elizabeth II.

Gareth Rowland

My wife and I have lived in Fleet for the past 20 years. We have raised our three children here and we now enjoy time with our three brilliant grandchildren. I graduated from the University of Nottingham, more years ago than I care to remember, with a degree in Chemistry. I recently retired from a business career where I led companies in the manufacturing sector, specialising in chemicals, industrial ceramics, and glass.

During this time I have held significant roles as CEO and Managing Director in both public and private-equity backed organisations for the past 30 years, including eight years living in the Netherlands and Germany. I believe my experience and skill-set can support the school’s continued excellence and help secure an even brighter future for its pupils and staff.

Paul Daniels

I am happily married to my lovely wife Angela. We are proud parents of two children: our son, who holds a degree in Politics and contributes to the Ministry of Defence, and our daughter, a Music graduate from the Royal Conservatoire in Birmingham. With a keen eye for fostering innovation and a knack for problem-solving, I am poised to collaborate with the SLT to find creative solutions that elevate the school's overall effectiveness. My experience stems from many years heading up a variety of departments (such as I.T., facilities, H&S, procurement, maintenance, corporate etc.) in a large national UK business.

Celine Gauche (Vice Chair)

I have lived in Fleet with my husband since 2010 and our son is currently in Year 5 at Heatherside Junior School. Originally from France, I moved to the UK 24 years ago to complete my Master and PhD studies. With a background in chemistry and qualifications as a Chartered Manager, I now lead R&D projects for a global FMCG company and am responsible for multi-million pounds product launches, as well as being an active member of the Women’s Inclusion Network and Mensa.

As a lifelong learner, I am passionate about nurturing people’s natural strengths, promoting equal opportunities, and fostering diversity and inclusivity. I hope my diverse background can bring a fresh perspective and new ideas to the school community, benefiting both the school and its pupils. I’m excited to play an active role in supporting the school and contribute as a parent governor!

I joined the school during my teacher training and immediately knew it was a special, caring, and lovely place to be. Over the past five years, I’ve had the pleasure of teaching in Year 5 and Year 3, and I am now working in Year 6. I lead History and PSHE across the school and particularly enjoy exploring the curriculum to make learning fun, exciting, and enriching for all children. I’m really looking forward to taking on my new role as a staff governor and working as part of a dedicated team to deepen my understanding of school governance and to help make our school the very best place to work and study.

Andrew Griggs

I moved to Fleet in 2022 having previously lived in Byfleet, Surrey for 9 years and West London before that. I have twin boys in Year 5 at Heatherside Juniors and we have all been made to feel very welcome by the Fleet community as well as at Heatherside Infant and Junior Schools. I would now like to give back and offer support to the School as a parent governor and contribute to the development and success of the students, ensuring they receive the best possible start in education.

By profession I am the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of a software company with 16 years experience focussed on building digital assessments (formative and summative) for the education sector. Through this role I lead sales, marketing, customer and partner relationship teams globally across the business. I aim to bring these skills to the role of Parent Governor to support the current Board of Governors and all connected to Heatherside Junior School.

Luke Mappley

I have two sons, my eldest is currently in Year 3 at Heatherside Junior School and we hope that both he and his younger brother will complete their primary education within Heatherside Schools community. I am extremely passionate about playing an active role within this school and to be able to give something back this is wonderful community over the coming years. As a governor, I look to draw upon the skills, knowledge, and experiences I have gained in my education through to PhD and in my career within a global clinical trials within the pharmaceutical industry. I also volunteer as a STEM Ambassador to promote science education and fostering a culture of curiosity and discovery among young students.

Elaine Greaney

I work as an engineering manager in the Space industry. I have one child at Heatherside Junior school and one who left to move to secondary school in 2023. I became a parent governor in 2020.

I am enjoying representing the Heatherside parents and supporting the school which has had such positive impact on my children and the community.

Lorna Owen

I have been part of the Heatherside Community for the last 24 years as a childminder and with my children having attended both the Infant’s and Junior’s. I have always wanted to become more involved in the schools but unfortunately work restraints and family life have not allowed. Now I feel I am in position to be able to support and learn more about the leadership of the school; and hopefully my knowledge and skills will be of value. I have particular interest around safeguarding and child protection; and to ensure all children have the opportunity to thrive in a safe and caring environment.
